Straus Family Creamery

Fleeing a war-torn Europe, Bill & Ellen Straus bought a small farm near Marshall, in Western Marin. Early environmentalists, the couple were leaders in their community, helping to spearhead the movement for collective land stewardship and sustainable practices throughout Marin. In the 1970’s, Bill & Ellen’s son, Albert, returned to the family farm. Working closely with his father, he helped implement practices which were radical at the time. In the mid-1970’s, the farm stopped using herbicides. In the early-1980’s, Albert implemented no-till farming practices, which helped prevent erosion of the land and reduce fuel consumption. A few years later, the Straus family committed to stop using chemical fertilizers. And by 1994, Straus Family Creamery was created and debuted as the first 100% certified organic dairy in the country. Today, collaboration with eleven other organic farms in Marin, Straus Family Creamery is the leader of high-quality, organic dairy products. Their dedication to land stewardship ensures that the farmland of Marin will remain healthy and productive for generations to come.
